majestic open space, with dark, polished floors ornamented
with a Ziegler Sultanabad rug made for the European market
in the nineteenth century. A white limestone fireplace is
the focus of the living room, surmounted by a gilt-framed
mirror, designed by Sawyer, that stretches to the ceiling.
Two important Poillerat sconces are mounted on the side
panels of the mirror. A scrolling brass fire screen, also
designed by Poillerat, sinuously neo-Baroque, rivets our
gaze. It gives the visitor to the loft enough of a cognitive
