past with a contemporary sense of spaciousness. Yedid
and Hickey judiciously treasure the roots of the building,
adding new flourishes only when they are proven to be
as equally compelling as the old.
A perfect example is the kitchen, where they have created
a crisp space with just enough complexity to render
it inviting. The space thereby avoids the unfortunate
morgue quality that afflicts some of its distant cousins.
Here the brick walls are both textural and historic and
serve as a counterweight against the sleek and well
chosen contemporary finishes.
