scrapers, Louis Sullivan. An excellent example of this Chicago
architects work is on the north side of Bleecker Street between
Broadway and Lafayette. Until recently New Yorks architecture
had been quite ordered and quite expected. But visit the refurbished Times Square area and one can begin to see a new
period in the citys sky-scraper architecture. The imposing New
York Times and Bank of America buildings are notable, as is the
Hearst Building, its interior in particular. So is the Conde Nast
Building. And Frank Gehrys newest residential tower downtown. On the subject of Gehry, Barry Dillers Gehry designed
headquarters, sited next to the West Side Highway, is a beautiful
composition in glass. All the above provide shelter for home and
commerce in New Yorks near vertiginous landscape.
