is a conversation I have to have over and over
again with patients of mine who are getting older.
One of my favorite patients came in this year
having turned 93. She was dispirited, and had
stopped walking her mile a day, and was feeling
old and hopeless. I pointed out that she was
perfectly healthy, and that while she might die on
the way out the door of the office, her statistical life
expectancy was about 4-5 more years and that
she might want to live accordingly. I suggested
that she go back to walking daily, but that instead
of a mile, she increase it to 2 miles a day to be sure
she had the independence to live another 5 years
in style. The message made all the difference to
her attitude, and she is back up to 2 miles a day.
She still has those 25 squadrons in reserve.
Henry Lodge and Chris Crowley have a message so clear
and so well articulated that it behooves us all to read their
books and it behooves both us, non-profit organizations
and government to make their voices heard. H
