Hindu pilgrims alone make
the trek every year, says
Lovejoy.
The air is so thinwe were
16,000 feet upthat it was
difficult to breathe. If I took
one boot off, he laughs, it
took another ten minutes
before he could summon
the energy to take off the
other. And it was so windy
that it was impossible to
draw, making it necessary
to photograph the sights
that would form the basis for
a vibrant series of paintings.
It was amazing to see
people wearing such brilliant
colors in a barren place
where essentially there is no
color, Lovejoy observes.
The vividly striped coats
worn by nomadic Tibetan
farm women are their normal
daily raiment. They even
wear them milking their
goats.
