Granting that over the years the hotels various owners
have changed, it has nevertheless been in consistent
operation since it opened in 1890, designed by Henry
Janeway Hardenberg. The only New York City hotel
to be designated a National Historic Landmark, it has
been the home, party venue or favorite dining spot for
newlyweds F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Conrad Hilton,
artist Princess Vilma Lwoff-Parlaghy and her lion cub,
Greta Garbo, Serge Obolensky, Alfred Hitchcock, the
king of Morocco, Eddie Murphy, the king of Saudi Arabia
and the Beatles. Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Miles
Davis have performed there. Today, part of the original
building comprises one hundred and fifty two lavish
condominiums, one of which sold for fifty million dollars.
