seen very elegant solutions to geometrical problems by
him. Add to this that he is a very respectable member
of society. He is a free man.
One can imagine Jefferson and Banneker at dinner
discussing a wide range of subjects, made possible
by a broad interest in the world around them, from the
theoretical to the physical, from the stars to mathematics,
to farming, to politics and to design. It bodes well when
citizens and leaders have this facility, or minimally, these
broad interests.
Returning to Bannekers quote, having his freedom, he
did not presume it would be easy for others. Bannekers
appeal to Jefferson revealed courage in the face of great
difficulties. He spoke to power.
We hope for many Jeffersons and Bannekers to continue
enlightened debate and civic creativity across many
breaches during this time of seminal change throughout
the world. H
