Tarzan might be absent but during the summer the garden
is alive with a tribe of Bradlee children and grandchildren.
They and friends make daily safaris to the pool, the beach
over the dunes, the thatched cottage and snacks in the
pergola. They are lucky enough to be witness both to this
remarkable house, the love of their grandparents and their
grandparents��� stories. A Life Work: Fathers and Sons, by
Ben Bradlee and his son, Quinn Bradlee, describes their
particular loving relationship. Deviating from those beaten
paths, they might find this secret garden���s own secret garden,
sequestered below the windows of Ben���s second floor study.
Once, as I stood in Ben���s study, looking out at the garden,
I considered Jamie Wyeth���s painting of President Kennedy
sailing his Wianno Senior, Victura, a rare lithograph of
which is just to the right of the window. When I met the
President, then a senator, we had talked about sailing on
the Cape.
At the end of a long day of filming, NBC/LXTV
producer Marnie Kupfer, segment director Adam Geise
and cameraman Alex Gittleman joined Ben for a drink
in the sunroom. Earlier we had lunch on the terrace
with Sally, Ben and their friends. Sally���s experience as a
hostess, writer, novelist and journalist made for lively and
memorable conversation. In her book, The Party: A Guide
