he first photograph I ever took was of Andy Warhol
taking a Polaroid of Willy Brandt, then chancellor of West
Germany, at his office in Bonn. It was February 1976, and
I was editor of Andy Warhol���s Interview, traveling with the
boss and his manager, Fred Hughes, around Europe,
helping to sell art and picking up ideas for the magazine.
I had acquired my camera���a Minox 35EL���earlier that
day. It was the first miniature camera that used standard
33mm film, and was made of matte black plastic, which
gave it a sleek James Bond look. Andy bought one, too,
the idea being that we would each take the same picture of the same thing everywhere we went, and then
make the results into a book, with his photographs on
HYLAND
