hull and low profile make her ideal for robust sea and the
sharp, capricious winds that would punctuate our voyage. I
immediately nicknamed her Cleopatras Barge.
Built for New England merchant, Benjamin Crowninshield,
the real Cleopatras Barge was Americas first private yacht. As
a child it was difficult to dislodge me from the replica of her
deckhouse at the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts
where I was born. Her voyages to the eastern Mediterranean
intrigued me. I always seek to find sailing yachts that in some
way incorporate her elements: teak decks, multiple wooden
masts, a bow-spread, wooden hull and of course a cabin evoking the atmosphere of Cleopatras Barges deck house.
